KWS04 – The Maasai Mara

This is an 9 day safari including the day you arrive and the day you return home.

Day 01: Nairobi – Maasai Mara

You are met in Nairobi Airport for your transfer to a the flight to Maasai Mara.  Where you are met at the airstrip and transferred across the plains to the camp. Freshen up before lunch. Afterwards, relax and absorb the surroundings before setting off on an afternoon game drive till sunset. Return to camp for hot showers, then an aperitif before dining under the stars.

Day 02: Maasai Mara

Rise early with tea or coffee brought to your tent. At dawn set off for another drive on the plains. Return to the camp for a leisurely breakfast. Afterwards, take an escorted walk around the camp grounds learning about the flora and medicinal uses of various shrubs and trees. Lunch and a chance to enjoy a siesta in one of the hammocks slung between the trees. Afternoon tea is followed by further game-viewing to sunset. Return to camp for an evening around the campfire.

Day 03: Maasai Mara

In the morning take an escorted game walk with one of our expert guides. The walk, which takes approximately 2 hours, offers another perspective in viewing the terrain and fauna whilst crossing the plains and traversing bushland in the surrounding areas.

This afternoon you may wish to visit a traditional Masai manyatta (village) or take another late afternoon game drive.

Day 04: Maasai Mara – Rusinga Island

Take a leisurely breakfast, then see the migration at the Mara Serena area and the nearby crossing points.

On arrival at Rusinga Island in the evening the tourist are served with a mouth watering delicious sea food meal and overnight.

Day 05:  Rusinga Island

Have a full day in Mbita visiting the site at Ligongo Hills where Dr. Mary Leakey discovered the skull of the oldest man Proconsul Africanus which is found in the Kenya national Museum Nairobi. The hill also acts as the vantage  point to see on rotation how water has gone round the Island. Visit to the Tom Mboya Mausoleum, the vibrant Politician in the History of Kenya who was gunned down in 1963 which evoked demonstrations all over the Country and was interred at their home in Kamasengre Village in Rusinga. Enjoy the mythological story of Nyama gi where the stones which are believed to have been bulls fighting from these different Clans. Get a ride around the Island back to Mbita in the evening, picnic lunch enroute, dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 06: Rusinga Island

After breakfast a visit to the rock paintings at the caves. Proceed for a traditional boat rally competition followed by optional activities e.g. a walk to Gembe Hills which is on the vicinity of your accommodation and has quite a number of Birds with a very tranquil surrounding or just relax around the hotel enjoying the serenity of the facility.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 07: Rusinga Island – Kakamega

After breakfast, Begin this day by visiting a local Catholic Church early in the morning after breakfast then visited Women groups organized by the widows as a result of HIV/ AIDS scourge, Orphaned children whose parents died of AIDS related diseases, Tom Mboya Memorial Hospital and the development projects which are being financed by voluntary groups departure to Kakamega. Departed to Kisumu and stopped over at Kisumu for lunch then continue to Kakamega forest. Arrive in the evening, then have an evening walk. Dinner and overnight.

Day 08: Kakamega

Early morning, drive through the Kakamega Forest there numerous species of monkeys like the De-brazza monkey, black and white colobus monkeys, looking like country and western singers with their tasselled limbs, redtailed monkey, potto (a large nocturnal sloth like creature), bushbaby, tree pangolin and leopard. There are over 320 species of birds. After lunch entertainment by the Sukuti traditional dancers. Later in the evening have dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Eldoret andFlying home

After breakfast, depart to Kitale via a breath-taking topography and sceneries along Kerio Valley. On arrival at Eldoret take a walk in this small town where most prominent long distance runners come from. At Eldoret tourist are entertained by the Kalenjin traditional dancers while taking refreshments. Drive to Eldoret Airport where board a plan to Nairobi and alight at 10.00 a.m. at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where they will be taken to carnivore hotel for lunch, before returning to connect with your flight home.
